Pain In Low Back? : 10 tips for gardening with a bad back

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

gardening-with-back-painYes people! Its that time again – get out your rakes, hoes, shovels and all of that good stuff – its time to get your garden on…

Every summer I get super excited about all of the planting I have ahead of me fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables are always a treasure in any home! However -  gardening isn’t ANY fun when you have an achy sore back.

Recently I read a great article on Mother Nature Network about tips when gardening with sciatica and lower back pain. These tips help to provide comfort to people with back pain so that they too can enjoy a romp in their garden when ever they please!

Tips are as follow:

1. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Never garden barefoot or in sandals. “Ideally, you should wear some sort of shoe that ties up and has good cushioning and arch support,” says Dr. Krista Boline at the Logan College of Chiropractic University Programs in Missouri. “Also, it’s important to always wear socks because they absorb the moisture [from sweating] and that way you won’t slip.” Remember: Everything is connected in your body and protecting your feet will also serve you in your efforts to protect your back.
2. Keep flowerbeds narrow and weed-free.
You will save yourself from straining your back if you don’t have to lean over lots of plants in a wide bed. Instead, design your garden so that you can easily maneuver around plants without having to reach too far. Also, make sure not to leave bare patches of soil where weeds will want to grow. Mulch the surface of your garden beds and use ground cover plants to maintain moisture and suppress weeds. This will minimize the need for bending over and straining your back to remove unwanted plants.
3. Use a wheelbarrow and kneeling stool.
If you are going to spend a lot of time working close to the ground, use a lightweight portable garden stool to protect your knees and joints while kneeling. Make sure you don’t strain your back when moving from place to place in your garden by lifting heavy things on your own. If you don’t have a wheelbarrow, it’s a good investment for your health to buy one. Ask for help from family or neighbors to load heavy items into or out of your wheelbarrow or divide up a large load into several more manageable smaller loads.
4. Use appropriate tools.
If you use gardening tools with handles that are too short or too heavy to allow you to easily reach the areas you need, you will increase the likelihood of straining your back. Instead, try using lightweight tools with long handles or extensions. Lips sums it up, saying, “The more things that you can push into the ground with your feet instead of bending over and pushing it in with your hands, the better.”
You can also make sure the blades on your pruners are sharp so you don’t waste time and energy snipping the same area over and over. Use a gardening belt to keep your tools easily reachable so you don’t have to constantly bend over and pick up them up off the ground. And avoid using heavy watering cans. Instead, switch to hoses on reels or an automated irrigation system that takes your back out of the equation altogether.

sciaticalm press releasePortland, ME (PRWEB) Preval(R) Health today announced the new product launch of SciatiCalm. Sciatica effects millions of Americans every year, SciatiCalm gives people relief of sciatica pain through homeopathic medicine.

“I have close friends and family that live their lives dictated by seat cushions, specialty shoes and mattresses to minimize their back and leg pain. It meant peace of mind. It’s a huge relief in my life, even though I’m not the one suffering with Sciatica!”

Sciatica is a set of symptoms, including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of the left, right or both sciatic nerves. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles. There can also be a tingling sensation, difficulty moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.

Although sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain, the true meaning of the term is often misunderstood. Sciatica can be caused by many different things, Spinal Disc Herniation, Spinal Stenosis, Piriformis Syndrome, different trigger points even Pregnancy. Certain habits such as standing too long or sitting with a wallet in your pocket can cause sciatic pain. Many of the symptoms can be caused by daily stress that is caused through work, such as sitting a lot or carrying a tool-belt.

About SciatiCalm

Millions of Americans suffer from the lower-back and upper-leg pain symptoms of sciatica. The condition is usually self-diagnosed. An attack can start with a dull ache in the lower back. Soon the pain spreads to the buttocks and into the back of the thighs. The intensity of the pain can increase and change from a dull ache to a searing or burning sensation. SciatiCalm was created to alleviate the symptoms of Sciatica from the inside-out. Homeopathic SciatiCalm tablets are specially formulated to speed directly to the area of back pain, working quickly and effectively to reduce the compression of the nerve. SciatiCalm was created to give fast relief from acute sciatic pain attacks, and help with long-term reduction in the frequency and severity of the attacks.
