Children and Sciatica

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Children and sciatica… isn’t sciatica only a condition for older people? Sciatica is a condition that is very common for aging people. Studies reveal that people ages 30 to 50 years will develop this condition. It’s rare for child to develop sciatica, but it can happen. Unfortunately, there is sometimes a link between children and sciatica.

In children, this is called growing pains, and if you have them when you’re little, there is a high chance for you to develop sciatica when you grow old. Spinal cord injuries will usually lead to sciatica in children, and the symptoms are also the same. It is typical to feel weakness, numbness, and pain radiating from the lower spine to the buttocks and legs.

In the case that there was no spinal injury, doctors will examine for psychosomatic causes. This pertains to emotional disturbances and not the physical conditions of the patient. When children have a condition called ischemia, there is a high chance to develop sciatica, as they grow older.

The symptoms of sciatica in children are usually mild and comparison to adults. This is because their bodies are healthier, as well as their minds. The child’s youthfulness is the reason behind sciatic pain resilience. Degeneration is not the cause and instead, it is due to spinal trauma. If the latter is the problem, you should seek immediate mediation attention. It is vital that you act at once to prevent permanent damage. Timely treatments are needed whether the cause is an emotional disturbance or spinal injury.

Since the bones of a child are still developing, there is a need to teach proper posture. A lot of people are prone to slouching when they sit or walk. Having the right posture will prevent the incidence of sciatic. Standing erects with chest out is the way to go, but this is not always observed. Bad posture can lead to body pains and even sciatica.

Many factors can influence bad posture such as being obese, poor standing or sitting habits, and not using ergonomic chairs. Losing weight is significant when you’re obese, and once you attain your ideal weight, it is easier to practice the right posture.

Teaching kids to follow the right posture can be tough. You also have to set a good example. You must teach them about exercises that can aid in good posture. Stretches will also do you well, especially if you’ve been sitting over an extended period. Kids can heal fast because they are stronger and healthier than adults! Children and sciatica is rare, but it can happen!

Sciatica & Back Pain Causes: Is Obesity To Blame?

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

With the rise of obesity in America, one can only ponder the types of health conditions which may occur as a result.

sciatica and back pain caused by obesityAccording to the The Obesity Society, one-third of obese patients suffer from musculoskeletal conditions, specifically back pain. While there is no one specific reason why obese patients develop back pain, there are several contributing factors that increase the likelihood for back pain. Dr. Angela Hee explains:
Being overweight can increase the stress and strain of the muscles and ligaments in the spine, especially in the lower back. The lower back curve can become distorted, causing the pelvis to tilt in an abnormally exaggerated manner. Poor posture, lack of spinal flexibility, and weak core muscles may lead to sprains and strains, nerve impingement, herniated discs, and degenerative arthritis.”
The key to a healthy diet and good nutrition is balance. People should consume adequate amounts of vitamins and nutrients. Consuming a balanced amount of recommended vitamins and nutrients is also important because certain nutrients and vitamins work in concert while others work against each other. A balanced diet should include a range of healthy foods and, if appropriate, nutritional supplements.

Gentle exercise will help greatly with weight loss, however be sure to discuss further with your doctor before attempting any type of exercise regiment.

Researchers Find A Gene Responsible For Chronic Back Pain!

Monday, September 12th, 2011

researcher find pain geneMedical researchers believe they’ve found a way to block the gene responsible for chronic pain! This could prove to be quite helpful for those of us who suffer from severe back aches and sciatica pain. University of Cambridge researchers were able to remove the HCN2 gene from pain-sensitive nerves in mice. They believe that this gene is responsible for evoking the pain itself. It seems they were right! “By measuring the speed that the mice withdrew from different types of painful stimuli, the scientists were able to conclude that deleting the HCN2 gene abolished neuropathic pain,” reports the BBC.

In addition to being common to lower back pain, neuropathic pain is also often seen in patients with diabetes and shingles, and in the aftermath of cancer chemotherapy, according to the BBC.

Professor Peter McNaughton, the lead author of the study and the head of the department of pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, told the BBC there was now hope for these patients.

“Individuals suffering from neuropathic pain often have little or no respite because of the lack of effective medications. Our research lays the groundwork for the development of new drugs to treat chronic pain by blocking HCN2.”

Yes, the research is still only on mice. But its implications, especially for those who suffer from chronic back pain in particular, are extremely encouraging!

Back Pain In Lower Back : Dogs and Masters Share Sciatic Pain

sciatica in dogs and ownersRecent Research conducted  by Dr. Niklas Bergknua a Swedish veterinarian, may prove to be useful in the future for suffering dogs and their owners!

In his research, Niklas used the spines of deceased dogs to create a sciatica solution for both animals and their owners suffering from a slipped disc.”Studies of dog’s backs provide enhanced knowledge about human back problems, since the course of the disorder is very similar,” he says.

In Sweden, 3.5 percent of dogs have some form of back trouble. Also, specific breeds are more prone than others to develop complications with their backs….

Niklas tested a new method of treatment for both humans and dogs with back trouble. He created a  disc prosthesis, made out of a hydrogel and tested the prosthesis on canine spines. The prosthesis has proven to restore normal anatomical distance between the vertebrae and normal mobility patterns for the backbone.

Niklas hopes in the future solutions such as these will restore lasting mobility in dogs with back problems so that after surgery problems will not reoccur.

In his studies Niklas Bergknut has collaborated with and been supervised by researchers in both Sweden and the Netherlands. His dissertation will moreover be defended at two universities, SLU in Sweden and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University.

Is Back Pain Genetic? Recent Studies Prove Back Pain and Genetics are Linked

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

genetics and back painWe are all aware of the impact that physical labor can have on our backs. However, heavy lifting may not be the root cause of backache… apparently, mom and pop may be to blame.

According to a recent article in the New York Times back pain can be inherited from parent to child.  A growing number of studies are linking back pain with a genetic component. One recent study was conducted in Utah and published in The Journal of Joint and Bone Surgery. This study used records from a large health and genealogical database to study more than a million Utah residents. While conducting this study researchers focused on people with herniated disks.

The study showed that regardless of environmental factors – people who had a second degree relative (aunt, uncle, or grandparent) that experienced chronic back pain or a third degree relative such as a cousin were at more risk of establishing chronic back pain. More so, a person having an immediate family member who suffered made them 4 times at risk!
